The idea for couples in community evolved from our recognition that the committed relationship is one of life’s most difficult undertakings. As couples we need other couples to support, encourage and challenge us to be real with each other. Paradoxically, being in a committed relationship can, at times, feel incredibly isolating. Because, as a couple, partners are so close to each other, it is easy to get lost in the trees and miss the forest.
Couples in community is our vision to create support for sharing, connection, and learning together is small groups, or pods. Personally, we have joined with five other couples to meet once a month for the past eight years. These gatherings have become an essential part of the lives of all six couples. We have come to rely on each other to help us through challenging times and to share our joys. We’ve come to believe in the profound value of our pod and would like to encourage other couples to create their own informal “tribe’ of committed couples.
Imagine what it would be like to be able to share with a trusted group of other couples about all the realities of forging a life together. From sexuality to money, from balancing individuality and intimacy to childrearing, having an opportunity to share the nitty-gritty realities of a shared life is truly a critical need for most of us.
